I know red fever, yellow fever, latin fever, and every other kind of ‘fever’ are all bad, but even just the wording of the term jungle fever particularly gives me a really bad feeling.
Part of the reason it doesn’t sit well with me is because I’m black, but a bigger reason is that the word "jungle" implies that black people are wild fucking animals.
And that doesn’t help the fact that most non-black people already only see us blacks as sexual objects with no thoughts and emotions.
Just the term itself is racist and further disconnects us from humanity. We’re people too. Not dirty, aggressive animals who only crave sex. We have sentiments and complex thoughts, and we build emotional connections just like everyone else.
Even without the meaning; it’s racist. Adding the definition makes it worse. It that means you like me literally only because I’m black and all of the stereotypes associated with being black; you think that we’re all the same, and you don’t care about my individuality and the substance that my mind and personality have to offer. Don’t you dare think it’s a compliment to tell a black person that you have “jungle fever”.
It’s not a compliment to tell any POC that you have “____ fever” for that matter.
Don’t fetishize black people. Don’t fetishize POC. It’s fucking racist.
Loving someone only because of their race and fucked up stereotypes is just as bad as hating someone only because of their race and fucked up stereotypes.
What’s the best cure for a jungle fever? A hug with a jack hammer and a kiss from a .22 pistol? You know, In case i meet some very sick white people…
